Complications After Hip or Knee Replacement Surgery?
Going to the doctor for a hip and/or knee replacement requires trust in the procedure, the replacement device, and the doctor performing said procedure. While adverse outcomes may occur due to factors outside of a device manufacturer or doctor’s control, according to Medicare.gov there is a one in eight chance that a patient will experience a complication.
When complications occur due to defects in the hip or knee replacement device, or as a result of malpractice, our team at ‘MAGGIO LAW stands ready to help. Our Jackson hip and knee implant injury attorneys know the ins and outs of filing product liability and medical malpractice lawsuits for the injured, and we work tirelessly to recover fair compensation for every client.

DePuy Hip Replacement Products
While hip and knee replacement device makers market their products as the solution for joint pain and mobility issues, the facts tell a different story. According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), well over 7 million Americans are already living with an artificial hip or knee, and a number of these individuals have filed lawsuits against the makers of their artificial hips and knees.
DePuy Orthopaedics has been the target of many lawsuits, alleging defects in the company’s hip and knee products. On August 24, 2010, DePuy voluntarily recalled two of its hip replacement products: the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and ASR XL Acetabular System. These were failing at higher rates than other forms of hip replacement.
Worse, it has been alleged that DePuy also knew about the high failure rates for their hip implants three years prior to the products being recalled. DePuy Orthopaedics, a division of Johnson & Johnson, recognized their hip replacement alone had a 40% failure rate within a five-year period, according to court records from previous lawsuits.
The Dangers of Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants
DePuy used metal-on-metal replacements for their recalled produces, which employed metal balls and sockets that create friction when they rub together. This friction can shed particles of the metal into surrounding tissue and the bloodstream. As a result, patients with metal-on-metal implants were at risk of having 100 times the normal level of cobalt and chromium in their blood.
This can cause necrosis and tissue infection, as well as:
- Heart damage
- Kidney damage
- Liver damage
- Nervous system damage
Additionally, when the replacements fail, patients then must undergo a painful “revision” surgery to correct the failures of the previous joint. Such procedures are needed when an artificial joint no longer fits properly. Unsurprisingly, significant pain and walking difficulty result from these faulty hip replacements.
If you or a loved one has suffered as a result of having a DePuy hip or knee replacement, our Jackson, MS attorneys can help. You may be entitled to financial compensation for your injuries.
DePuy Knee Replacement Products
DePuy’s record with knee replacements is similarly troubling. In 2013, DePuy voluntarily recalled their knee Limb Preservation System (LPS), a replacement device for patients suffering from severe soft tissue damage and bone defects. The FDA issued a statement on the Class 1 recall in 2013, informing the public that such a recall is reserved for products that could cause seriously adverse health consequences and/or death with reasonable probability.
The FDA stated that the LPS posed a fracture risk that could lead to severe complications:
- Loss of function
- Loss of limb
- Severe infection
- Compromised soft tissue
- Death
Signs of a DePuy knee replacement problem may include:
- Limited range of movement
- Dislocation
- Stiffness
- Infection
- Fracture
- Swelling and pain
- Decreased walking ability
