Depo-Provera Lawsuit Attorneys
Dangerous Drug Lawyers Serving All of Mississippi
If you took the injectable contraceptive Depo-Provera, also called the “birth control shot,” for at least a year and were later diagnosed with meningioma, the drug might be the direct cause of the brain tumor. Depo-Provera use has been linked to a significant risk of intracranial meningioma, which may cause severe or life-threatening health complications.
Our attorneys from 'MAGGIO LAW are proudly standing up for women in Jackson and throughout Mississippi after they used Depo-Provera and developed intracranial meningioma. If this has happened to you, please talk to our team right away to see if you can file a claim or lawsuit in pursuit of fair compensation.
Criteria to be eligible to file a Depo-Provera lawsuit will usually include:
- You used Depo-Provera for at least one year (equivalent to four shots total or one shot every three months).
- You are still eligible if you used a generic brand of the “birth control shot” as long as you used name-brand Depo-Provera manufactured by Pfizer for at least one year.
- You were diagnosed with meningioma after at least one year of using Depo-Provera.
- You are still eligible if you were diagnosed years or decades ago as long as you used Depo-Provera for at least one year before your diagnosis,
- You used Depo-Provera any time during or after 1992 (virtually all Depo-Provera users will not have used it before 1992).

What is Depo-Provera?
Depo-Provera is an injectable contraceptive that uses medroxyprogesterone acetate, which is a synthetic progestin hormone. When administered once every three months, the drug will interrupt ovulation and thicken cervical mucus, making impregnation extremely difficult. Tests have shown that Depo-Provera is around 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.
Depo-Provera Linked to Meningioma
Depo-Provera has been linked to bone density loss, a serious side effect that was not disclosed to doctors and patients. For this reason, Pfizer was taken to court many years ago, but only recently started offering settlements for those lawsuits.
However, Depo-Provera is once again at the center of controversy and legal action after it was linked to a high risk of intracranial meningioma. The British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently published a French study that used more than 108,000 medical records from women who used Depo-Provera throughout their lives. Based on the researchers’ findings, women who used Depo-Provera for at least a year were more than five times more likely to later be diagnosed with intracranial meningioma than women in the control group who did not use the birth control shot.
Is Meningioma Dangerous?
Intracranial meningioma is a type of benign brain tumor. Even though it is benign, intracranial meningioma can still be extremely dangerous. As the tumor grows or shifts, it can put pressure on or damage nearby brain tissues and nerves, which may result in a variety of unsafe health consequences.
People with intracranial meningioma often suffer from:
- Arm or leg weakness
- Confusion
- Hearing loss or tinnitus
- Loss of smell
- Memory loss
- Migraines
- Seizures
- Vision changes like blurriness
To treat intracranial meningioma, brain surgery is usually the only option. Unfortunately, brain surgery will always carry risks of complications, even when conducted by highly experienced surgeons. Therefore, Depo-Provera may have put countless women at risk of not just intracranial meningioma but also the complications associated with brain surgery.
Holding Pfizer Liable for Depo-Provera Injuries
Just like when Pfizer was held liable for Depo-Provera’s link to bone density loss, it might be liable for its link to meningioma. Product liability laws are often capable of holding a product maker strictly liable for any harm that its product causes to consumers, so this legal rule may very well apply again. Also, according to some legal complaints that are forming against Pfizer, the Big Pharma company has been accused of knowing about the drug’s link to meningioma but withholding that information from the public and medical communities. At the least, arguments have been made that Pfizer reasonably should have known about the meningioma risk because it is so prominent but failed to conduct its due diligence while designing and testing the injectable contraceptive.
If Pfizer is liable for your injuries, you might be able to use legal action to demand compensation related to:
- Past and future medical expenses related to your meningioma diagnosis.
- Past and future lost income related to meningioma complications.
- Past and future pain and suffering caused by or related to meningioma.
- Lessened enjoyment of life due to life-changing meningioma complications.
- Shortened life expectancy if meningioma has caused severe or terminal complications.
