Cancer Linked to Chemical Hair Straightening Products

The Journal of the National Cancer Institute recently published a study that found a connection between chemical hair straightening products and cancer. Nearly 34,000 women were highlighted in the study because women use chemical hair straighteners overwhelmingly more frequently than men. Furthermore, Black women are statistically more likely to use these products when compared to other female demographics; the study included about 20,000 participants who self-identified as Black.

Based on the outcome of the study:

  • Women who did not use chemical hair straighteners had a 1.6% risk of developing uterine cancer by age 70.
  • Women who did use chemical hair straighteners had a 4% risk of developing uterine cancer by age 70.
  • The longer a woman used a chemical hair straightener, the more likely she would develop uterine cancer by age 70.

This early data suggests that the use of chemical hair straightening products more than doubles the risk of developing uterine cancer. The risk of other forms of cancer was not reported because the study focused exclusively on uterine cancer, which was the most prevalent among the participants.

With such a significant increase in the risk, researchers have determined that there is a probable link between the two. More research will need to be done to make a definitive conclusion. However, women can take legal action now.

Who Can File a Hair Straightener Cancer Lawsuit?

Legal action against chemical hair straightener product makers is only just beginning, but there is no such thing as preparing too early for a lawsuit. If you think you have a valid claim after being diagnosed with uterine cancer, then please reach out to our firm.
