What are the Dog Owner Liability Laws in Mississippi?

Our Jackson dog bite lawyers at ‘MAGGIO LAW can help you take the right steps toward a fair financial recovery. In Mississippi, there is no specific “dog bite statute” governing dog owner liability. The courts handle these matters based on precedents set by past rulings, which generally follow what is known as a “one bite” rule. Unlike in some states where dog owners can be held liable for injuries their animals inflict regardless of specific negligence or wrongdoing, the victim of a dog attack in Mississippi must prove that the animal has known aggressive tendencies or bit someone in the past.

Looking for experienced help with your dog bite claim? Call (601) 265-6869 or contact us online. Your consultation is free, and if we take on your case, there is no fee unless we win!

What Are the Most Dangerous Breeds of Dogs?

Pit bulls are responsible for the majority dog bite fatalities in the United States. Pit bulls are muscular, short-haired, and stocky animals and may include various breeds or hybrids of American pit bull terriers and American Staffordshire terriers. Many cities and counties across Mississippi have laws and ordinances in place regarding pit bulls. Some areas ban people from owning pit bulls, and others enforce restrictions on owners of pit bulls and label these animals as “vicious” or “dangerous.” Similar ordinances apply to rottweilers, wolf-dog hybrids, German shepherds, chow chows, and Doberman Pinschers, in certain cities.

According to dog bite fatality statistics presented by DogsBite.org, from 2005 to 2018, the following breeds were responsible for 471 fatalities in the U.S.:

  • Pit bulls (66%)
  • Rottweilers (10%)
  • German shepherds (4.2%)
  • Mixed-breed dogs (4.2%)
  • Mastiffs/bullmastiffs (3.6%)
  • American bulldogs (3.2%)
  • Huskies (2.8%)

To find out if the breed of dog may impact your claim, and to learn more about your right to compensation, call (601) 265-6869. We are standing by to help!
