The Cost of Living with a Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injuries are extremely expensive when it comes to emergency medical care and the need for ongoing treatment. In fact, the lifetime cost of living with a spinal cord injury can quickly add up to the hundreds of thousands or even hundreds of millions of dollars, depending on the extent of paralysis.

According to NSCISC, the lifetime cost of paraplegia (paralysis of the legs and lower trunk) is approximately $2.3 million for a 25-year-old and approximately $1.5 million for a 50-year-old. The lifetime cost of quadriplegia (paralysis of all four limbs and the trunk) is approximately $4.7 million for a 25-year-old and approximately $2.6 million for a 50-year-old. These figures do not consider indirect costs of a spinal cord injury, such as lost wages or benefits.

Types of Spinal Cord Injuries

The spine is an incredibly complex collection of nerves and vertebrae with varying functions, therefore every spinal cord injury is different from the next. The effects of a spinal cord injury are heavily influenced by the location of the injury and the extent of the damage suffered.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) classifies spinal cord injuries into the following degrees of severity:

  • Incomplete injury: There is still some movement and sensation below the injury site.
  • Complete injury: The damage is so severe that nearly all sensation and motor control below the injury site is lost.

In addition to incomplete vs incomplete, spinal cord injuries are divided into the following two broad categories:

  • Tetraplegia: Formerly known as "quadriplegia," tetraplegia describes the condition of a person with a spinal cord injury anywhere from the C1 vertebra in the neck down to the T1 vertebra in the upper back. Individuals with tetraplegia often lose sensation, function, or movement in the head, neck, shoulders, arms, hands, upper chest, pelvis, and/or legs.
  • Paraplegia: Paraplegia is a general term that describes the condition of people who have lost feeling or motor control in the lower parts of the body, such as the chest, stomach, hips, legs, and/or feet. Paraplegia typically results from spinal cord injuries between the T2 and S5 vertebrae.
