When most people think of burns, they picture severe injuries that require immediate medical attention. However, there are actually four different degrees of burn injuries, each with its own set of symptoms and treatment options.

First-Degree Burn Symptoms

A first-degree burn is the least severe type of burn. It only affects the outer layer of skin, known as the epidermis. A first-degree burn can cause redness, pain, and swelling. It is often compared to a mild sunburn. The skin may be sensitive to touch and appear slightly darker than usual. In most cases, a first-degree burn will heal within a week without causing any lasting damage.

Second-Degree Burn Symptoms

A second-degree burn is a type of skin injury that causes damage to both the epidermis (outer layer of skin) and the dermis (inner layer of skin). Second-degree burns are also known as partial thickness burns. They usually heal without scarring but may result in permanent changes in skin color.

The symptoms of a second-degree burn can vary depending on the severity of the injury. In most cases, the affected area will appear red and swollen, and may be accompanied by blistering, crusting, or peeling. The skin may also be painful or sensitive to touch.

Third-Degree Burn Symptoms

A third-degree burn is the most severe type of burn, and it can cause serious damage to the skin. The symptoms of a third-degree burn include severe pain, redness, and swelling. The affected area may also appear white or charred. Third-degree burns can be very painful, and they often require hospitalization and surgery. In some cases, skin grafts may be necessary to treat the burn.

Fourth-Degree Burn Symptoms

A fourth-degree burn is the most severe type of burn. It extends through all layers of skin, ensuring damage to muscles, tendons, and bones. Symptoms of a fourth-degree burn are intense pain that does not lessen with over-the-counter medication, white or blackened skin, formation of eschar (a hard crust that forms over the wound), and possible bone exposure.
