A whopping 30% of motorists on the roads of Mississippi are driving around without automobile insurance. On top of that, about half the drivers that are actually insured only carry state minimum insurance of $25,000.  Put those two numbers together and you will quickly realize that 2/3 of the drivers in Mississippi are either uninsured or under-insured. What this essentially means is that if you were in a wreck while in Mississippi, you would have about a 66% of not being fully compensated for injuries from a negligent driver.

So, you’re probably asking yourself, “How can I protect myself and family from a situation where we will not be fully and wholly compensated if we are injured in wreck with a uninsured motorist?” The answer is that you need to make sure that YOUR insurance contains an Uninsured Motorist policy.

What is Underinsured/Uninsured Motorist Coverage?

Uninsured Motorist (UM) coverage is part of your car insurance that is written into your policy to help pay for medical costs and repairs to your vehicle in the event that you are involved in a car accident and the at-fault party lacks automobile liability insurance. Underinsured motorist coverage (UIM) is a gap insurance portion of your insurance that is designed to help make up the difference in the event you are involved in a car accident where the at-fault party carries the state minimum insurance and your medical bills and/or car repair costs exceed that amount of coverage on their policy.

State law in Mississippi states that an insurance policy is to include uninsured motorist coverage unless a policy holder expresses in writing that he or she does not wish to carry the coverage. The reason why a policy holder would opt out of UM and UIM coverage is to save money. This is not the place to try and save a few bucks. Make sure that when you obtain car insurance that you do not sign a waiver of uninsured motorist coverage and make sure that you express to your agent that you want to keep the coverage. Don’t worry, you won’t get an agent to object to you spending more money on your policy.
